Our mission

Our mission is to contribute to Western Australia’s energy transition by producing clean, renewable power from a large geothermal resource known to exist in the Mid West region of the State.

Mid West Geothermal Power (MWGP) was founded in 2019 to evaluate and develop known geothermal resources in the Mid West area of Western Australia. Subsurface data from oil and gas drilling confirms the presence of a significant geothermal resource capable of generating clean, dispatchable power and helping to advance the state’s shift toward renewable energy.

Geothermal power is a zero-emissions source of renewable energy that harnesses heat from within the earth to generate electricity. By the end of 2023, geothermal power plants were in operation in 30 countries and global capacity exceeded 16,000 MW, supplying millions of homes with reliable energy.

Recent technology advances are expanding its potential, making it an increasingly attractive option worldwide, including in Australia, where geothermal potential has long been recognised. One of the most promising areas is the Mid West region of Western Australia, approximately 300 km north of Perth, where high geothermal gradients are well documented.

A major breakthrough came in 2014–15 when petroleum exploration drilling encountered an excellent reservoir in the Kingia Sandstone, at depths greater than 3,500 meters. With reservoir temperatures exceeding 150°C, this resource is ideally suited for geothermal power generation.
